You can choose to forgo public insurance to purchase private medical insurance on your own. There are many medical insurance programs and private products sold by life insurance firms and other companies. You may also choose to buy a supplemental policy to cover added costs that come into play with cancer, diabetes, and chronic illnesses. Usually, customers pay a certain amount of contributions and receive payments after they stay or visit medical facilities. If you contribute to a private medical insurance program and not to a public health insurance one, you will have to pay the entire sum of your medical fees up front.

Japanese hospitals and clinics will most likely not accept foreign insurance, so it is best to either join public health insurance or purchase a Japanese private medical insurance policy.
