Medical certificates for sick leave
Doctors can provide you with a certificate stating what your illness is and how long you may have to take off from work. This is called a medical certificate （診断書, shindansho）. Some workplaces require this if you want to take sick leave, so be sure to confirm the procedures before going to the doctor. The certificate usually costs money （around 3000 to 5000 yen）.
