Acquiring a status of residence (for newborns)
If you have a child in Japan, and that child is not a Japanese national (ie, does not have a Japanese parent), you must apply at the Morioka Immigration Officeto acquire a status of residence for the child. This must be done within 30 days of birth; however, you do not need to do this if the child will leave the country within 60 days of birth. Do not forget to also apply for citizenship for the child at the appropriate embassy.
