Permanent residency
Due to the exceptional nature of permanent resident status (namely no restrictions on permissible activities or period of stay) there are very exacting criteria to be met and any application for permanent residency by a foreign national is considered very carefully.

In general, the Immigration Office is looking for materials showing that the applicant's behavior and conduct have been good; materials showing that the applicant has sufficient assets or ability to make an independent living; and the foreign national's permanent residence will accord with Japan's public interests.
